Programs / Ministries for Seniors at OPC

At Oswego Presbyterian Church we like to say: “Every Member a Minister.”

The purpose of this “Seniors” Directory is exactly that - to encourage every member, senior or young, to be a minister by…
                      Embracing community –
Here at OPC, we pray that every group, small or large, weekday or Sunday morning, embraces their calling to be one community of faith in Christ.
                     Developing relationship –
Here at OPC, we seek to go deeper into our relationships in order to become stronger disciples of Jesus Christ.
                     Building Faith –
Here at OPC, we strive to always grow in depth of faith and in opportunities for service in the name of and for the sake of the Kingdom of Christ our Lord.

For all of this to happen, every participant in every committee, team, group and task force must see themselves as Ministers to each other and to the world. No small task, to be sure, but one that is worthy of our best efforts and prayers. In this directory, you will find many exciting ways for seniors to ‘get involved’ and ‘get connected.’

We are excited that Rev. Leon Aalberts, our recently named Pastor Emeritus, will be helping us start a new ministry group (or groups) specifically for seniors. [See more about this below.] My hope is that YOU find a place to grow and develop and build your ministry here at OPC.

                                                 Keeping the Faith,

                                                 Terrance. P. Hennesy,
                                                 Pastor, Head of Staff.

June 6, 2011 posting from Rev. Leon:

At our Senior Gatherings yesterday (June 5) we had around 35 people attend. The enthusiasm for the idea of having a monthly old-fashion hymn sing and support of other senior activities was great.

It was noted  that there are a lot of new seniors in town going to the Senior Center and more programs would attract some of them to OPC.

I left the group with a charge to dream, to share the information with others and to get back together again at a later date.  The later date I suggested was in three weeks.  We can publicize that.

The recommendation was made to have a spot on the web page to attract newcomers and to publicize to the group.  [Ken Mozingo volunteered to get our "Seniors" web page started.]

The recommendation was made to have a rather often (weekly) email sent out to the seniors to keep them informed.  I’ll try to get out a letter with some attachments to the Seniors informing them of what happened and of the next meeting.

Two deacons said that there was a need expressed by “short term” housebound people to have some human contact (phone or visit).  I said for now that if any of them knew of people like this to contact me and for now I’d make arrangements.

Travel in a big van sounded adventuresome to them.  There were lots of suggestions of places to go.

A transportation team was suggested.

A publicity team was suggested.

A phoning team was suggested.

We're off to a great start!

Rev. Leon
